Description

This is an old project I did in college using a grid method.

Step:
1. find a photo with hard lighting
2. draw a grid on thin tracing paper (onion skin)
3. repeat the grid on the paper you will be drawing on lightly or with a non-photo blue pencil
4. The first panel I drew just the shadows of the photo as I saw them
5. The 2nd panel again I drew just the shadows but using straight edges only
6. The 3rd panel again I drew the shadows but using only curved lines.
7. The 4th panel again I drew the shadows but the grid was curved to one side.

There are different methods to get the grid onto the paper you are drawing .... In class the teacher provided a photocopy of the grids, and layed the tracing paper on top drawing on the tracing paper. If you have a light table you could draw in regular paper laying on top of the grid template.

Getting the grid onto your photograph you are using:

2. You can photocopy the grid template on to a transparency sheet. WARNING: if you do this method you need to use transparency paper right for the machine you are using to transfer the template on to. Regular transparency paper will work in most photocopers but have a risk of melting in the machine if the FUSER is too hot (this fuses the ink to the paper in all photocopiers and laser printers)

1.You can get transparency paper for Inkjet printers. WARNING: the transparency paper package MUST say for Inkjet printers if not you run the risk of ruining your printer.

This was a fun project to do.

Enjoy :D
